DC Ranch Construction

DC Ranch has become a thriving metropolis within the Scottsdale city limits.  So much so, it’s expanding just to make room for more residents and improve upon already beautiful surroundings.

Being a resident of DC Ranch comes with certain responsibilities, along with incredible benefits.  The DC Ranch Clubhouse is getting a makeover thanks to the members of the community who voted for improvement.  A whopping 90 percent of the members cast their vote to revamp the community’s facilities.

The DC Ranch Clubhouse is home to over 540 families and these enhancements are vital to the future of the DC Ranch community.  A major overhaul is in the works for the Clubhouse Kitchen, Tennis facility, bar and dining areas.  While the next three months may become trying on your nerves while dealing with construction near your home, remember patience is key.  The inconvenience of construction crews being on site just shows the committment DC Ranch has for its loyal members.  They want to beautify your home and keep moving forward by continuing to improve your neighborhood.

DC Ranch is home to two premiere golf clubs, fabulous restaurants, state-of-the-art tennis courts and olympic-sized swimming pools.  The Club is mere minutes away from high-end shopping centers in the center of Scottsdale.

Meanwhile, The Country Club at DC Ranch hosted the 2013 Arizona Mid-Amateur Championship May 29 to 31 where  some of the most talented golfers in Arizona participated.  Congratulations are in order for one of our very own.  DC Ranch Club member Kristoffer Marshall swung his way through the course to be named the 2013 Arizona Mid-Amateur Champion.

Grayhawk and DC Ranch have become a little piece of heaven nestled in the desert.

know 150x150 Scottsdale 85255 Fun Facts

85255 Facts

California may 90210, but Arizona has 85255.  What is 85255?  It’s only the zip code of the most sought after place to live in Scottsdale, Arizona.  85255 is home to Desert Highlands, DC Ranch, Troon Village and Grayhawk

The recent real estate boom has exploded in North Scottsdale.  This is due in part to boundless recreational activities like year-round golf on professional golf courses, breath-taking desert sunsets cascading off the Sonoran mountains and sunny skies that shine nearly 365 days a year.

With all this, it’s easy to understand why people are flocking to luxury living in Scottsdale.  However, there are a few little tidbits that may not be as well-known to the average buyer looking in the zip code of 85255.

Did you know there has been a 38 percent population increase for Scottsdale in the last 12 years?  A study was compiled between the years 2000 to 2012 on population increase in the area.  As of last year, the population increased to just over 36-thousand-700 for Scottsdale 85255 alone.

Population increases are huge news for home prices.  When population increases, then the competition for homes rise, and therefore prices for those home will increase.   Last year, the average cost for a home in this zip code was just under 480-thousand dollars.

Analysts say the real estate market is expected to see a steady rise for the next year so that means sellers can expect an increase in home value in the coming year.

Living the luxurious life in Scottsdale comes at a cost, but huge payoffs.  The cost-of-living is about 51 percent higher than your average community.  The education system in 85255 is stellar with students receiving more care with a 19 t0 one student to teacher ratio.  About 38-hundred dollars is spent by public schools per student per year.

The unemployment rate is decidedly lower than the national average.  Scottsdale’s unemployment rate is three percent lower than the national average.

These are just a few fun facts about living in the luxury zip code of 85255.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead in Scottsdale has special meaning to DC Ranch.

brown 150x150 Scottsdale Trails Open

DC Ranch Hiking

You can’t beat the hiking trails that wrap around Scottsdale’s DC Ranch and Grayhawk.  Hikers, amateurs and professionals alike, have been anxiously awaiting the chance to strap on their boots for the much-anticipated opening of North Scottsdale’s Brown’s Ranch trailhead.

After years of blood, sweat and taxes, the city of Scottsdale has managed to continue the preservation of our precious cactus-filled desert by expanding the McDowell Sonoran Preserve by almost 13-thousand acres.  Preservationists diligently worked to protect our flourishing desert for future generations and after three years and some  218 million dollars, Scottsdale has announced the addition of Brown’s Ranch Trailhead.   The trail is located at 30301 North Alma School Parkway where you can easily park your car while hitting the trail.

The naming of Brown’s Ranch Trailhead has a bit of meaningful history regarding our very own DC Ranch.  In the early 19-hundreds, E. O. Brown was a respected businessman and entrepreneur who live in what is now called DC Ranch.  Brown established the DC Ranch and Brown’s Ranch areas, which is now famously part of north Scottsdale.  Jump ahead 100 years, the city of Scottsdale purchased the decades-old Brown’s Ranch to safeguard.   In all, over 27-thousand acres of land has been purchased and set aside for preservation.

It’s not just for hikers.  It’s not everyday you can see horseback riders take to the streets, but here in Scottsdale, we see horses gallop through the streets every day.  Brown’s Ranch Trailhead is designed for horseback riders, hikers and of course mountain bikers who love to glide through the rocky paths.

So far, residents can explore an additional 50 miles of trails north of Alma School Parkway and Dynamite Boulevard.  With the development of 90 more miles of trail beginning in October 2013, there will be 140 miles of total trails in the plan for the north area.

The Conservancy will start patrolling the area in September and be in full operation in October, 2013.  The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is asking for volunteers to staff and patrol the trails as it is expected to be a very popular hot spot in town.

Making your home in Scottsdale’s DC Ranch or Grayhawk gives you a leg up on the trails that are practically in your backyard.

DC Ranch Fights Cancer

DC Ranch residents have been asked to join in the fight against cancer.

acs 150x150 DC Ranch Fights Cancer

DC Ranch Joins ACS

Cancer.  It’s an incendiary disease that families and friends have been fighting against for countless generations.  Since its inception in 1952, the American Cancer Society has been doing research to find a cure to cancer.  ACS has selected the Scottsdale area in the hunt for cancer fighters who want to share the word about the importance of participating in Cancer Prevention Study-3 or CPS-3.  ACS is interested in finding special people who want to spread the word about the CPS-3 study and look for volunteers.  CPS-3 is unlike any study in history.  It’s a nationwide analysis that will assist researchers in understanding more clearly the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

DC Ranch resident and American Cancer Society staffer Mariah Secrest-Comer touts this study as quote, ”a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Americans to participate in lifesaving cancer research.”  Secrest-Comer goes onto say how excited ACS is to offer this opportunity for area residents.

The study is August 20 through August 23.  Secrest-Comer says, “Our goal is to recruit 50 or more CPS-3 champions in Scottsdale and enroll a total of at least 500 participants during this time.  In order to reach these targets, we need passionate people who are committed to fighting cancer.  While the American Cancer Society has been conducting these types of studies for decades, their world-class research department can only study new and emerging cancer risks if members of the community are willing to become involved.”

As with any study, there are a number of specific qualifications each candidate must meet in order to participate in the CPS-3 Study.  If you are interested in joining the study, you must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and have never been diagnosed with cancer.  About 300-thousand people across the United States will be chosen to participate in the study.

“Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, ‘What caused my cancer?’ In many cases, we don’t know the answer,” said Secrest-Comer.  “CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer.”

Come join us on Thursday, June 27, between 6:00 and 7:00 p-m  at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center (first floor).  CPS-3 “champions” will receive all the information they need to help educate and recruit community members to enroll in CPS-3 this coming August.

To RSVP, call the American Cancer Society’s local office at 602-952-7553.

DC Ranch Games

In today’s society, it’s not unusual to live in a neighborhood and be clueless as to your surroundings.  Many people go about their daily lives in anonymity without ever questioning whether their next door neighbor has a name, career or even a hobby.

If you’re looking for more than a passing nod from the guy next door, DC Ranch is where you want to live the rest of your days.  Being a member of DC Ranch Country Club is the closest thing to having your family welcoming you home every day.

The Country Club at DC Ranch wants to bring the entire community together.  Weekly games, such as Mahjong and Bridge are a favorite among the Country Club set in DC Ranch.  It’s not only an opportunity to experience new joys and develop life-long friends, it’s also a chance to give back to the neighborhood.

Country Club resident Denise Kelly is a fan of all the activities the community has to offer.  Kelly thrives on the DC Ranch life.  She says quote, “everyone knows everyone and we’re like a great big community.”

Eileen Miller has been an active DC Ranch resident for 14 years.  Miller cares deeply about her neighbors and the lives they all lead.  In fact, Miller was just elected to the Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM).  She says quote, ”We share traditions like holidays here with the other families.”  Miller and her husband Bill recently took up residence just a couple blocks within the community to the Longhorn neighborhood.

The Millers are prime examples of what two dedicated members of a close-nit community can achieve when given the opportunities.  The first organization set up to raise money for local charities was ”Heartstrings.”  Many in DC Ranch became active volunteers for the beloved Heartstrings.  The group also raised thousands of dollars for organizations like Ryan House and HopeKids.

DC Ranch is home to a rich and fulfilling life.

DC Ranch goes Hollywood!

DC Ranch HGTV

“Lights, Camera, Action!”  The Hollywood spotlight hits our very own DC Ranch.  Tune in on Monday, July 15, for an all new episode of “House Hunters” featuring DC Ranch residents Blake and Sarah Tablak.  The Tablak’s welcome HGTV’s “House Hunters” into the DC Ranch neighborhood and highlight ideal living in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Here’s the premiss!  Blake and Sarah are ready to call Scottsdale home and put down roots for their son after living in four states in the last three years.  Anyone who has ever delved into the real estate world looking for that perfect house understands there are certain criteria the ideal home must possess before you even consider putting in an offer.  The Tayblak’s are no different from the average couple visualizing their dream house when HGTVs “House Hunters” came knocking to help.

Sarah and Blake have a laundry list of wants and needs that “House Hunters” must provide to seal the deal.  One top priority is having a large-sized house that can give the family some breathing room and space to grow.  Another must-have includes a sparkling pool in a large backyard for where their child can run and play.  Temperatures skyrocket into triple digits in the desert during the height of summer and a pool is an absolute necessity.

The kitchen is the heart of the home and Sarah desires a modern kitchen with up to date features.  She has also requested the home be free of any pet dandruff from previous owners as the family is very allergic.

Blake is demanding a large jetted tub, three-car garage and an extra room in the house that can be converted to an office.  They both want to have a park near their home to garner more play time for their child and possibly meet new life-long friends now that they have decided to stay put in Scottsdale.

The Scottsdale real estate market is highly competitive and locating the Tablak’s dreamhouse is going to be a challenge within a 600-thousand dollar budget.

McDowell Sonoran Mountain Preserve Jeep tours are on the road again.

McDowell Sonoran Jeep Tours

Whether you live in DC Ranch or Grayhawk, take a glorious journey to a wonderland of awe through the McDowell Sonoran Mountain Preserve.

The Scottsdale City Council has agreed to allow motorized vehicles to tour the land on a temporary basis.   On June 1, Jeep tours were systematically banned from the preserve after Scottsdale purchased the Granite Mountain land from the state.  According to Scottsdale’s ordinance, motorized vehicles are not permitted on the mountain.  However, after much debate and a bit of an uproar from a few DC Ranch and Grayhawk residents, a nine-month trial has been granted to allow Jeep tours.  This is considered a temporary trial period set aside specifically for educational tours.

There is an argument to be made that Jeep tours driving haphazardly around the precious preserve could diminish the lay of the land.  However, the purpose of the land that has been set aside is to enjoy what is being preserved for future generations.

Anyone interested in giving Jeep tours of the McDowell Sonoran Mountain Preserve must have a permit.  The city of Scottsdale is requiring drivers to obtain “special-use permits” during the trial period set forth between September 1 and May 31.

As with any permits allotted by the city, there are rules and regulations all operators must abide by during tours.  There is a three-point-six mile route that has been designated through the open desert northwest of 136th Street and Dove Valley Road.  Another important rule to follow is the tour must be education-based.  These tours are not meant for joy-riding through the Sonoran desert.  The tours must also promote the city of Scottsdale and provide access to a quote, “wide demographic.”

Permits are 100 dollars non-refundable and Scottsdale has the right to revoke any permit at any time.

Scottsdale Police Go Futuristic

Police in DC Ranch, Grayhawk, Silverleaf and every Scottsdale neighborhood are leaping into the future with one click.

Wearable Video Camera

The Scottsdale Police Department is taking a page out of the sci-fi flick “Demolition Man” and attaching state of the art cameras into all uniforms for Scottsdale officers.  This new picturesque contraption is an on-the-body video camera called Axon Flex Body Camera.

The Scottsdale police department purchased ten Axon Flex body cameras a couple of months ago.  These small cameras flexible and lightweight that are easily concealed as officers can place them on their shirt collars, hats or glasses.  The cameras have the ability to record a small incident or an entire shift of the police officer.  Police officers were well-equipped with the new technology when sent out on routine assignment throughout the downtown Scottsdale area

Sergeant Mark Clark of the Scottsdale Police Department says quote, “There have been studies that have found that when officers are using cameras to videotape contacts, that both the officer’s behavior and the person’s they’re contacting behavior is better because they know they are on camera.”

The Axon Flex is homegrown manufactured by Scottsdale-based Taser International Inc. and costs about ten-thousand dollars each.

A spokesman for Taser International, Steve Tuttle, explains the device is always on because officers can’t always be aware an incident is about to unravel where a camera may be needed.  The camera is always on, but the officer must hit record to view a scene later.  The shocking part is the camera has a memory and automatically records 30 seconds before the officer punches the record button.

Monster sunglasses manufacturer Oakley has jumped on board with the Taser team that designed the Axon Flex.  After a few drawbacks such as lack of video playback components, the team worked with Bluetooth and discovered officers could then send video back to their cell phones.

Tuttle says the Axon Flex is “improving behavior on both sides of the badge.”  Scottsdale officers have another year to go on the trial period and then renegotiate the future of police work.

tour Tour de Scottsdale Kick Off Party

Attention all cyclists!  It’s time to burn rubber and cruise to the 4th annual Tour de Scottsdale Kick-Off party Thursday, August 1.  The DC Ranch Community Council is hosting the annual bike bash and offering discounts to cyclists who register for the race at the kick-off party.

If you register on Thursday night between 4:30 and 6:30 p-m, cyclists will be granted special discounts for the 30 and 70-mile Tour, plus in-store specials.  The Tour de Scottsdale event is enforcing a of two-thousand cyclist minimum so if you want to participate, don’t hesitate.  The party is located at 16414 N. 91st St., Suite 103 Scottsdale, AZ.

The 10th annual Tour de Scottsdale is Sunday, October 13, 2013.

The Tour de Scottsdale is an event hosted by the DC Ranch Community Council in an effort to preserve the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.  The DC Ranch Community Council, in association with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, promotes  the McDowell Sonoran Preserve’s longterm ecological balance that will favor future generations.

The tenth annual Tour de Scottsdale launches at Market Street in DC Ranch, which is located near the southeast corner of Pima Road and Thompson Peak Parkway in Scottsdale.  The event features a 70-mile and 30-mile citizen’s ride.

The 30-mile course for the Tour de Scottsdale includes almost 12-hundred feet of relatively easy terrain with sporadic  elevation changes.  Cyclists will bike a difficult course in the first half of the race and then make an easier transition with a gradual descent toward the finish line.  The 70-mile course is more difficult and offers a challenge to experienced cyclists.

If you want to join in the effort to save the McDowell Sonoran Preserve for future generations, but don’t want to feel the burn of biking, it’s easy to volunteer.  Save the preserve from the sidelines and volunteer for “On-Course support, Expo Support or Pre-Ride Activities.”
